Practical Tips to Support the New Parents in Your Life

Whether it’s your first baby or your sixth, welcoming a new life is a huge transition. There’s joy, exhaustion, and everything in between. Last week on Instagram, I asked: What were the kindest things people did for you during that time?

And wow—you all delivered! So many thoughtful, practical, and deeply meaningful responses poured in. These are the little (and big) ways people showed up, offering love and support when it mattered most.

Here’s what you shared:

  • Folded my laundry.
  • Doordashed a coffee and breakfast sandwich.
  • Checked in on me—often and without expectations.
  • Spent time with me without needing to hold the baby.
  • Prepped five meals and stocked my freezer.
  • Brought fun, easy-to-clean-up activities for the big siblings (sticker books, activity books, etc.).
  • My mom always brings whatever meal I want after delivery.
  • My sister-in-law set up my pump, showed me how to use it, cooked dinner, and bathed the baby.
  • A big basket of snacks and fresh fruit from Trader Joe’s.
  • My SIL stayed overnight to care for the baby so we could sleep.
  • A friend gifted me a charcuterie box—perfect for easy snacking.
  • A few frozen crockpot meals, ready to dump and cook.
  • My best friend cleaned my house while I was in the hospital.
  • A thoughtful care package: chapstick, hair clips, and a cozy oversized sweatshirt.
  • A bag of homemade freezer burritos for easy breakfasts and snacks.
  • Dropped off food and Uber Eats gift cards.
  • A photographer friend captured sweet, candid moments of us at home.
  • Set up a meal train.
  • Surprise cookie deliveries to my porch.
  • Stocked my kitchen with essentials while I was in the hospital—milk, juice, snacks, everything.
  • Took my dog for a walk.
  • Listened to me talk about my birth experience without judgment or unsolicited advice.
  • Sent check-in texts, even just to say, I’m thinking of you.
  • Simply brought me water.
  • Cut up fruit and snacks for the kids.

These gestures—big and small—made such a difference. If you know someone welcoming a new baby soon, consider one of these thoughtful ways to show up. Sometimes, the simplest things are the most meaningful. ❤️
