Free (or Almost Free) Summer Fun for Kids Around PGH in 2025

Summer’s here! And if you’re anything like us, you might be looking for some fun and easy outings that are affordable or better yet, free. We asked our Dandelion Kids community to share their favorite or low cost ways to spend summer days with kids and WOW did they deliver.

Here’s a curated list of local gems and activities to help fill the long, sunny summer days with joy, connection and maybe a little bit of water.

Splash Pads! – checkout the ones in Castle Shannon, Beechview, Bethel Park, Lawrenceville, South Fayette, Upper St. Clair, Moon and more.

Water Steps! Located on the North Shore, these are great for climbing, splashing and cooling off.

South Park Cascades – let the kids play in the water while you enjoy a bit of beautiful scenery.

Raccoon Creek State Park Beach – a little drive but worth it for a full beach day with out a long trip to the ocean

Libraries! Do not sleep on our local libraries! They are offering more than just books this summer. You might even notice some Dandelion Kids coupons in some local summer reading challenges!

RAD Pass! With your Allegheny County library card, you can score free tickets to museums, gardens and more. Check it out here.

Playgrounds! You know we love a playground. Here are some of our very favorites.

Berry Picking at Triple B Farms or Simmons Farms.

Round Hill Park – farm animals, a playground and some space to roam.

Open Streets – enjoy some time in the streets of Pittsburgh! Bring your bike, slip on some sneakers or grab the stroller and go.

Camping – A fun way to get our doors and enjoy a change of scenery! We use hipcamp to find our local campsites.

The Museums! We love a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo, Aviary, Children’s Museum, History Museum, Phipps, The Botanic Gardens and Science Center. How lucky are we to have so many great places at our fingertips.

Bonus: Join a local group!

Several families mentioned how much they love being part of The Audubon Society! Worth checking out!

There are tons of momwalk groups popping up around the city! Check them out and get to meeting local moms!

We of course have our storytime sessions every Thursday morning at 10AM! We will be here all summer long.
